HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAAMA JANET MUSEVENI: A MOTHER, LEADER & NATION BUILDER
June 24, 2026
Today Uganda and Sevo2-MK Media Team celebrates a pillar of strength, grace, and service as Her Excellency Janet Kainembabazi Kataaha Museveni*, First Lady of Uganda and Minister of Education & Sports, marks her birthday.
Born on this blessed day 24th June 1948, our first lady has not only kept our president in a peace of mind, she produced for us our highly anticipated next president Gen MK.
1. The Liberation Struggle Pillar, before 1979 and 1981 to 1986
Maama Janet stood firm during Uganda’s darkest hour. While President Museveni and the FRONASA to NRA fought Uganda’s greatest liberation war, she became the sole parent to the young Musevenis. Diana was just 6 months old in 1981. In that season of bush war and exile in Nairobi and Sweden, Maama held the family together. President Museveni himself testified: “Maama has been the pillar of the family especially between 1971-1979 and 1981-1986* when she was a sole parent to the young Musevenis”. That resilience helped secure the foundation for Uganda’s peace.
2. Transformation in Karamoja
As Minister for Karamoja Affairs from 2011-2016, Maama Janet walked the dusty terrain of the region she loved. She replaced guns with books, pushing peace initiatives, education access, and women’s livelihood programs. Under her stewardship, Karamoja began shifting from conflict to development. She became “Maama Karamoja” a name earned, not given.
3. Revolution in Education & The New Curriculum
Since 2016 as Minister of Education & Sports, Maama Janet has driven Uganda’s biggest curriculum reform in 20 years. The Competence-Based Curriculum for Lower Secondary emphasizes skills, critical thinking, and hands-on learning over rote memorization. She has championed teacher training, TVET expansion, and the inclusion of moral/religious education — insisting that *“education must build both the mind and the character of a child”*. Thousands of Ugandan children now learn to solve problems, not just pass exams.
4. The Rock Behind the President
For decades in marriage, Maama Janet has been President Museveni’s anchor. Her discipline, prayer life, and sober counsel have enabled “Omugurusi” to live longer, stay focused, and lead Uganda with clarity. She is the “Ginga, Mummy, Maama” he publicly celebrates — the quiet strength behind State House decisions.
5. Mother of the Nation’s Next Generation of Leaders*
Uganda thanks Maama for giving birth to and nurturing Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, CDF of UPDF — the most anticipated next president by millions of Ugandans. A disciplined soldier, strategist, and patriot shaped under her motherly guidance. From raising a future army chief to raising a nation’s hope, her motherhood is national service.
6. A Woman of Prayer & Scripture*
From her days in Scripture Union at Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School, Maama Janet has been a prayer warrior. That foundation produced Pastor Patience Rwabwogo*, an intercessor for this nation. True to Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”The fruit is evident children raised in the fear of God, now serving God and country.
*7. Champion of Women & UWESO*
In 1986, fresh from war, she founded *Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans - UWESO*. For 40 years, UWESO has rescued war-affected and HIV/AIDS orphans, empowered women with skills, and proved that women’s leadership heals nations. Maama’s struggle for women’s empowerment started before it became policy , she lived it.
*ETC… The Legacy Continues*
From Ruhaama MP 2011-2016 to First Lady, from exile to State House, Maama Janet’s life is a sermon in sacrifice, service, and faith. Uganda is better because she said “Yes” to duty.
*Happy Birthday, Maama Janet Kataaha Museveni.*
May the Almighty grant you many more years of health, wisdom, and impact.
*Praised be the Lord for her life and contribution.*
